Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate and Kobudo
Mensore. At D.C. Kodokan, we study Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate as taught in the Shodokan (Higa Seiko Sensei) and Kodokan (Kimo Wall Sensei) dojos. Our dojo is a noncommercial school located in Northern Virginia (Alexandria). We incorporate the details of the system and kata of Goju Ryu Karate as passed on directly by Higa Seikichi Sensei and other long standing Shodokan members, as well as the 'martial' approach to the art emphasized by Kimo Wall Sensei particularly in the 1970s and 1980s, into our training. Additionally, we study Okinawan Kobudo as taught in the Zen Okinawa Kobudo Renmei (Matayoshi Shinpo).
The head instructor, a long time student of Kimo Sensei and member of the Goju Ryu Kokusai Karate Kobudo Renmei, has been actively training for 40 years mostly under the tutelage of senior teachers. This includes living on Okinawa training at the Shodokan dojo on three separate occasions totaling 14 years starting in 1991 through 2022. If you are over 18 and interested in joining us or want to learn more about our dojo, contact Jay Schwarzmann at jayschwarzmann@gmail.com. Members of the associations listed above as well as those from other Okinawan Karate styles passing through the area are welcome to stop by to exchange ideas on training or have a chat about life on Okinawa.
